It’s been over three years since the last upgrade to Apples popular Macbook Air range, with many speculating that the Macbook Air would be phased out in favour of the entry level Macbook model. From a recent report coming out of Taiwan, which mentions similar news to several other reports, it seems that not only should we expect a new Macbook Air in the pipeline, but that we can actually expect it to arrive in the next couple of months, maybe even in September or October.

The most concrete news is that an ‘entry-level’ Macbook will be released before the end of the year; this was reported by both Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman. Despite some outlets stating that this would certainly be a new Macbook Air, Kuo and Guzman have not agreed with this as of yet.

Due to the age of the most recent update to the Macbook Air, it is still shipping with 5th generation Broadwell processors, which are falling far behind the 8th generation chips available on the Macbook and Macbook Pro. It seems likely that the Macbook Air will either be updated or discontinued, but as all analysts agree that we should expect a sub €1,000 Macbook this quarter, a new Macbook Air seems the most likely.

Only time will tell what is really being planned, but with the new iPhone range set to be announced next month, we should at least hear more about the Macbook then.
